Dining Halls and Kitchen

At least two meals a day were prepared and cooked in the Kitchen for the prisoner population. Rations were brought in but most fresh produce was grown here by the prisoners themselves. Rationing was endured by everyone in Britain!

Each building had ornate, but practical, gardens to the front, rear and sides. The prisoners often entered into local gardening competitions, and often won!

The artifacts here although authentic MOD issue, originate from Camp No. 81, Pingley Farm, at Brigg in Lincolnshire and donated by Mr Harry Thorpe, the current owner of that site, to whom we are extremely grateful. All the artifacts were still being used as recent as the 1980's by migrant agricultural workers from the Continent and further a field. They didn't just use the kitchen equipment either. They used the WW2 lockers, the bunks and even the WW2 mattresses!

Canteen

The prisoners regularly congregated here to play cards, read letters & newspapers, chat & discuss the news both here, at home and other events of the day or possibly just to relax and while away the rest of their available free time.

The amazing murals you will see in this building are unique, valuable & extremely delicate therefore we kindly ask you not to touch them or the 'elaborate?' window dressings made from hardboard & lath.

The paintings are all painted onto fibreboard and after 60 plus years they are currently in an extremely delicate condition. Because of their condition we are considering various methods of restoration where the paintings can be restored 'in situ '. The paintings, we believe, are the work of only one man whose identity, at this moment, is unknown save for the cleverly disguised initials, MR, in the 'Foals in the Meadow ' picture border in the bottom right corner. All the murals have been digitally reproduced and enhanced. The reproductions are guaranteed ,limited editions by the owners and are currently on sale in the Gift Shop.
